Malieficent Metamorphosis

No Boundaries was inspired by the Northern California mountains. I like to paint from a birds eye view, there is something spiritual about being above it all, soaring through the sky, drifting on the currents of air. My hope is to bring a feeling of peace and calm to the viewer, helping them to realize we are all guardians of our beautiful planet. I spent about ten years in Westport, CT. Almost every day, I would head to Sherwood Island State Park, the oldest State Park in CT. It is a beautiful place and during the week, it doesn't get many visitors. It has a two lovely expansive, sand beaches on Long Island Sound, ruins of old farm houses, an orchard which must be from revolutionary times, wood and wetlands, (which make a wonderful bird sanctuary), and miles of paths to walk through it all. It is incredibly peaceful. Soaring to new heights in a hot air balloon led to my fascination of painting from a bird’s eye view in my Mountains series. Cultures across the span of history have gravitated to the mountains for peace and clarity, as do I.

This three panel painting depicts the Wasatch Mountains in moonlight. I live in Park City, Utah, and am lucky enough to look at this beautiful mountain range from my studio. Day or night, it is ever inspiring to see the magnificence of our planet. This is one from deep in my subconscious. I grew up in a house that was well over 200 years old. It had a lot of character and many strange things occurred in this house. I often sensed there was a presence lurking nearby and was afraid to go to bed at night. My mom would leave the light on in her room to comfort me, which helped me to go to sleep at night. — “I’ll be right in the next room…which was never close enough after a nightmare”. Fiordland National Park in New Zealand is an otherworldly place of infinite beauty. I have never seen as many waterfalls in one place as when I visited there. I wanted to capture the ancient feeling I had when visiting this land that seemed untouched by human beings. The aerial view is a favorite of mine. I hope to convey the feeling of gliding through the air towards the "Silver Lake", with the water flowing all around. The crosswalk seems to melt while the traffic rushes by. Charred palm trees solemnly stand, observing the hazy twilight. Silver reflections dance across the wires and lights of this urban evening. Hopefully the pandemic has given us time to think about our own, personal legacy.

I have many incredible memories of warm summers spent on the lakes of Upstate New York. We would watch as the storms progressed from the far side of the lake to our shore, taking cover on the porch or, if we were at the beach, sheltered in the car until it blew over. I used different sizes of brayers to lay down the initial indigo and abstract the mountains and roadside. The area in the upper right is sanded with steel wool to let the silver reflection show through, bringing reflective light as opposed to the clouds which are painted, splattered and dripped into place.
