It was mid-afternoon, no one was there, and I wasn’t sure I was in the right place to go into Manhattan. A man approached and we started talking. He was “Solus” a street artist from Dublin Ireland who was in town to work with “The Bushwick Collective” on the murals in Brooklyn. This was a few years ago, before it became super popular. He was telling me about the murals he had planned for some walls in Manhattan and that he was invited to participate in “Art Basel” in Miami. At this point I thought he was telling some tall tales so when I got on the train I googled him. It was all true. I investigated the Bushwick Collective and my love of Street Art was born. Interpreting flowers in spray paint brings a modern edge to a traditional subject. The veils of color create softness and new colors, blending the edges and building a rich hue on the flat surface of the silver steel. In this piece, I experimented with masking, using cut out curves and edges to shield the panel while layering colors on top. “Electrical Storm”, 19″ x 38″, oil on aluminum, $2200 Autumn Wind by Hung Liu, Crystal Bridges “Grey Sky at the Beach”, 8″ x 8″, oil on wood panel, $200 Lauren’s Rose, 38″ x 48″,Acrylic on recycled, distressed board, $6400, Painting by Eric Schmidt “Summer Storm”, 15.5″ x 19.5″, etching ink on paper, $975 “Tropical Red”, 21″x 21″ acrylic spray paint on steel, Sold “I’ll be right in the next room…which was never close enough after a nightmare”.
