I have a friend who teases me saying that I only paint blue paintings. I did a whole series of bright paintings just to prove him wrong but the jest continues. The truth is that I am really drawn to this palette for several reasons. Transparent paints work really well on the metal panels and come in a variety of blue hues. They let the shimmer and shine of the panel seep through creating a unique depth to my compositions. Hues of blue convey a cold, icy environment in my wintery scenes quite well. Lastly, it helps me to express what moves me about a particular place, storm or happening. The painting above is titled, “Lost in the Blue Night Sky”, oil on brushed aluminum panel, $7250.
Here are some more of my blue paintings that are available now at The Summit Gallery. Stop by and check them out in person, the new gallery space is just below the Town Lift on Main Street, Park City. Below is “Midnight Run”, oil on brushed aluminum panel, 51″ x 51″. $9200.
Above is “Timp at Sunset”, oil on brushed aluminum, 39″ x 51″, $7250. Forever enchanting, Mount Timpanogos, or “Timp” as the locals refer to it, captures my heart. It is a spectacular mountain complete with a glacier that can be seen year round. I enjoy painting all the undulations and crisp ridges that protrude through the snow as well as the golden glow of the winter sunset. I included the road in this piece to capture the reflection of the light.
Above is “Drops of Jupiter”, oil on brushed aluminum panel, 39″ x 39″ $5800. I have always loved the song, “Drops of Jupiter” by the rock group “Train”. I never really bothered to look up what the song was about. I did a deeper dive and found that the song is about the artists mother’s passing and his imagining where she is now. I lost my mom a long time ago but my heart still aches and I really don’t think you ever get over missing those who are no longer on the planet with us.
Autumnal Equinox”, above, oil on brushed aluminum panel, 51″ x 51″, $9200. Hiking in the mountains is one of my favorite things to do. Being up above it all and seeing the world stretched out before me, I feel like an angel. In the autumn when everything turns to gold and the sky is the brightest blue, well it is pure magic!
Last but not least, “Murdock Peak – Altitude, 9602’”, 39″ x 29″, $5800. This is one of the iconic peaks that every skier worth his or her salt must hike up and ski down. I don’t like to hike in full gear in the snow but I did make it to the summit of Murdock Peak last summer. It was a challenging hike for me as we went up the face of the rocky peak and then once at the peak, realized there was an easier way to get there. There were amazing views and although I was exhausted when we got back to the car, I felt quite accomplished. I earned a very restful sleep that night.
