When is a painting finished?

I tend to put aside a painting when I get stumped or frustrated. Consequently,  I seem to have a lot of works in progress! After moving once again this summer, I really needed to clean out my studio, and give myself a fresh start. I pitched a lot of paintings that I had lost passion for but I found the beginnings of this painting. It was inspired by the incredible brilliance of the Japanese Maple trees that I passed when I walked down Stonybrook Road, near my old house in Westport, CT.  I realized, the stone wall that actually exists on that road, and just about every road in Westport, did not need to be there.  The painting works much better with out it and the ambiguity of the light play through the trees is far more interesting to me.
