Where the Buffalo Roamed

We rose early during our trip to Yellowstone National Park to see the wildlife. The park rangers keep a close tab on where the herds of buffalo are likely to be and we were lucky enough to see many of them. Some were so close to our car by the side of the road it was a little scary, they are huge beasts. At other times we could see the herds in the distance. I can only imagine what it must have been like a couple hundred years ago when they all roamed free.

This oil painting suggests the morning mist, and a ghostly herd of buffalo, roaming free under a big western sky.
